Literacy at Mayfield 2013-14
Our MIG group has been looking at ways to take Literacy forward in Mayfield.  We split into smaller groups to investigate the following areas:
Resilience
We would like Resilience booklet days to encourage pupils’ to be more independent, and for pupils to be engaged.  Our group has created some sample pages from some new booklets where pupils can complete an activity a week without teacher intervention in an area that interests them.
Dockyard
A scheme of work has been written for dockyard sessions where pupils use their literacy and numeracy skills through games.  Positive feedback has been received from both staff and pupils.
On your marks
Activities are proposed to improve pupils’ literacy skills.  These include a Word of the Week (WOW) and learning to spell key words from all subjects.  These activities will contribute to our Spelling Bee – a competition between all the houses.
Literacy Across the Curriculum
Staff are already using a purple highlighter to identify spelling mistakes.  We want pupils to then take responsibility for correcting the spelling by using the dictionaries that are in all classes.  This should then be copied into their planners in the key words sections so they have their own list of words to learn.   These keywords, or words provided by the teacher, can then be learnt as a homework task.
We think a Literacy mat would be useful for all staff to have on their desks.  They can then refer to this for useful tips to help with AEN pupils and differentiation.

Students are to be encouraged to speak to anybody using full sentences.  A poster in all classrooms will enable staff to remind pupils’ of this expectation.

  1. I really like the word of the week 'Robust'. I will be using this in my P.E. lessons to describe myself and other sporting personalies. For example: Rugby players are powefully bulit so therefore they are 'Robust'.

As The English Department, this played to our strengths :O). But, we are now going to "Answer in Full Sentences" for our target. Thanks!

  3. The Word of the Week continues to be implemented - increasingly being rewarded through the register. The WoW is now on the staff bulletin and on the school's website.

  6. I love word of the week! Encourage it in my lessons and out and about in the corridor! There's always the incentive of getting a WoW merit for them!

  7. The Word of the Week will continue next year. The words will be subject related so any suggestions welcome.
